Deonarine (Deo) Cup being played this weekend (Aug 1 - 2, 2020)

One of NSCA's best annual events occurs this August long weekend with the playing of the Deonarine (Deo) Cup. Traditionally a major fundraiser for the NSCA, the Deo Cup also has deep historical significance in addition to being an important opportunity for players to put performances on the board against the best Halifax has to offer, in advance of the selection panel picking the Nova Scotia provincial team for upcoming games.

Due to Covid, all fund raising and sponsorship events have been cancelled for this Deo Cup however the tournament is played over 2 days in a single round robin format between the four HCL clubs Halifax Cricket Club, East Coast Cricket Club - ECCC, Nova Scotia Avengers Cricket Club & Halifax Titans Cricket Club

The Deonarine Cup is named after Bhan Deonarine, who is a Life member of the NSCA and served as an honorary board member and statesman of the Association for well over 40 years. He had overseen cricket survive through both good and lean times in Halifax since the early days of the NSCA. Warmly considered the grandfather of NS cricket to modern day players in Halifax, Bhan served on the NSCA board in just about every imaginable role including President, Secretary, Treasurer and Provincial Director.

Bhan was also a long-time servant of Cricket Canada, best known for his role as National Selector and Chairman of Selectors, through the years which oversaw the national men's team to the ICC - International Cricket Council World Cup in 2003 and 2007.

Sadly, Bhan passed in 2016, but will forever remain alive in our hearts and memories, and the NSCA is honored to have Bhan's wife and family (Shobha Gashus Dave Deonarine) attend the Deonarine Cup presentation ceremony every year to hand over the trophy that bears their family name.
